How to remove rust from...?

Well i have two salt and Pepper shakers and one of the lids are rusted.Almost no rust is on the Salt shaker lid but alot of rust is on the inside of the Pepper shaker lid but a little is on the top.All i need to know is how to get rid of the rust so i can use it.I can't go to a hardware store or any thing to but somthing to get rid of it.I was wondering if i could use some type of acid?And could i make it at home?
i dont have any vinigar but could i use some type of cleaner or mix salt with something i dont knwo why i just keep thinking salt will help.

You might try soaking it in vinegar and then using a toothbrush to gently scrub the tops; rinse thoroughly. Be very careful as vinegar may discolor silver. (Test it by putting a drop or two on the top before immersing the caps in the vinegar). If that fails, go to the grocery store or WaMart and look for a jar of silver, brass or stainless steel cleaner and polish (depending upon what metal the caps are). Good luck!

PREPARATION: Mix baking soda and liquid soap in a container. Dilute with water and add vinegar. Stir with a fork until the pieces are gone and the mixture has a pourable consistency (you may need to add water). Pour into a clean compression of 16 ounces (the genus with flip top jet.   • All Purpose Cleaner - You will need 2 TBLS of white distilled vinegar, 1 white tea Borax (available in grocery stores in the laundry aisle) 16 oz HOT, filtered water, 1 / 4 cup liquid soap. Preparation: Mix the vinegar and borax in a spray bottle cleaner 16 oz Fill with water and stir until the borax is dissolved. Add the liquid soap, stir to mix again. To use: simply spray and wipe.
